Finding Balance in a Hectic Lifestyle

Luke 38-42

Martha and Mary

38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching.40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.”

This month our theme for my church's small group discussions is "Finding Balance in Life" which let me tell you I smiled ear to ear hearing this because I have the hardest time structuring my lifestyle to balance my spiritual, physical, and mental needs. Especially in college.

Our discussion spurred from the passage above. I have read/heard sermons on this passage numerous times, yet there were some questions presented that I have never heard/thought of before and I wanted to share them.

Focusing on verse 38 first, "Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house." Before Jesus walks into Martha's house what do you imagine the scene being like when Martha asks Jesus into her home? When I was asked this question I immediately went to the passage above and tried to see if there was an answer, but there wasn't. I actually had to use critical and analytical thinking to come up with a response taking into consideration the time period and previous Biblical stories. (Side note - I blame the school system for this one. We should not be removing design and analytical thinking... Okay I am off my high horse). Once I was able to collect my thoughts, I came to the conclusion Martha was most likely super nervous yet excited at the same time when she invited Jesus to her home. Furthermore, by her inviting Jesus to her home she must have known of who He was and she most likely believed it.

The next question I thought was kind of unique. Do you think Martha or Mary is older? Personally, I thought Mary was older because I associated these sisters with my relationship with my brother and I. I remember being younger and running around frantically and brother just kind of chilling, and being like "wow when is she just going to sit." I also associated the common phrase

Looking into the life of Martha and Mary was actually a lot harder than I wanted to admit. I kept trying to associate myself with Mary saying "Oh yeah I would definitely not stress and just be in awe of being in the presence of Jesus Christ." But, if I am being completely honest without myself I would probably be more like Martha. With my personality, I thrive being busy. I mean don't get me wrong when I'm busy and stressed I do find myself complaining (which is something I am working on) but when I have free time I do not know what to do with myself. But, moral of the story I pray both you and I can find time just sit and listen to Jesus. By this I mean develop spiritual discipline and be in God's word everyday and conservation with Him in order to develop a deeper and meaningful relationship.

Well, that's all for now! Hope you have enjoyed the read. :)
